“How is livestock worth more to this land than us?”

A HOST OF IRISH women have lent their voices to a powerful short film calling for the Eighth Amendment to be repealed.

The film was created the Repeal Project, which caught the attention of the Irish public with its black jumpers bearing the word ‘REPEAL’.

The new short, called We Face This Land, was directed by Dave Tynan (who made the viral clip Just Saying) and features a poem by the author Sarah Maria Griffin.

Griffin told DailyEdge.ie that Tynan asked her to write something for a potential film for the Repeal project, and she felt “the time had come to do something”:

When I was writing the poem, I couldn’t get the witch-hunt imagery out of my head; how there is a long tradition of putting women through horrific ordeals as punishment for just existing… I thought back over the chats I’d had with friends and strangers about their abortions.

Thirty Irish women including Aoibhinn McGinnity, Senator Lynn Ruane, and Charlene McKenna recite the poem as they walk into the sea.

“There’s an urgency here: this is almost exactly two months from the first chat about the film to the release,” Griffin said.

That urgency I hope shows in the work, too. We can’t sleep on this issue.
